Pursuing a major in business and world languages at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas, Texas, Zoe Reardon received two four-year, merit-based scholarships to study at the institution. The recipient of an International Baccalaureate diploma prior to enrolling at SMU, Zoe Reardon excelled academically at her high school, the Atlanta International School (AIS).
A private institution that has primary, middle, and upper-grade levels, AIS encourages its students to be good global citizens and strive to make positive impacts on the world. One way the school promotes a global education is through its language program. According to the school’s website, its language learning opportunities and diverse multicultural environment help students gain intercultural competence. AIS students are taught to view language as more than a communication tool. Expanding students’ linguistic capabilities enable them to better understand and empathize with people from different countries and cultural backgrounds. Aside from the interpersonal benefits, the school also recognizes the cognitive benefits of learning a foreign language, including strengthening the area of the brain that manages executive functions like focusing attention, solving problems, and multi-tasking.
